Post Escargot
on: September 3, 2011, 22:58

After a great deal of pondering I built Phil Theil's Escargot in 2000. At the time the plans were for a peddle powered version, but I did my own modifications and added an outboard. After I completed it I met Phil at the local boat show and gave him a ride. Back on the dock Phil spend considerable time measuring the placement of the bracket and it's distance from the water. As a result Now the plans include the outboard as standard. I also added six inches to the height, as I am long in the torso and just wouldn't fit. I think that is MUST do, as otherwise the boat is too low to move about in comfortably. I do not know if Phil has added this change to the plans.

The plans are VERY complete and very high quality. I had built a small boat prior to this, and have a pretty good sense of geometry and space, but I think anyone with a touch of handiness can complete this boat, as everything is square and epoxy can cover a multitude of errors!!

Check out the escargot journey stories at shantyboatliving.com. I am the moderator and have included all the stories about building. It should give you a VERY strong sense of how the boat is built.

I am sorry to all that I haven't posted answers here. I didn't notice them!

Phil is rather old now, and when I last saw him a year ago or more he wasn't too healthy. But... I've not heard from anyone having problems getting the plans. He doesn't do email.

Detailed working drawings and construction procedures for the advanced amateur builder are available for $150 US from:
Philip Thiel, 4720 Seventh Avenue NE, Seattle WA 98105 USA.

Thanks for the information Brian.
Coming from the east coast, I've always been involved with boats of some kind. Now that I'm retired, I want to build Phil's "Escargot" and cruse the inter lake waterways.
I'll let you know how the build goes.

>>and cruse the inter lake waterways.

I'm on (near) the east coast as well - where are you thinking of cruising?

I just got my planes fro a waterlodge too - depending on timing, I'm thinking oc east across Lake Erie, across the Erie Canal - and then???

I live just east of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The most popular waterway is the Trent Severn Waterway. Trent is on lake Ontario and Port Severn is on Georgian Bay, Lake Huron.
