    One funny little addition…

Phil lives just about ten minutes from my house. He doesn’t do email, so I went to visit him to pick up Escargot plans. We chatted for a good 45 minutes or so. He spent some of that time trying to get me to build a smaller boat. He later told me that when I walked away he just knew I wasn’t going to build it. For some reason I just seemed not up to the project! In reality, there had been one built before mine, but the size and layout was changed totally after that one. Mine was the first built of this new design.

Interesting site thanks Bryan. With the headroom in the Escargot how is it possible to use the Galley for cooking etc or is it possible to sit? Cheers Peter

I chose to not build the galley in. Instead, I stand in the open space created by swinging open the front hatch. Then, I use the inside lid of the front hatch, which thanks to the hinges is now a nice flat space next to the hatch. There I place my small two burner gas stove and my cooking supplies. It actually works quite well. I’ll see if I can find a picture and include it some time soon. Bryan

      Hi Peter,

I got to visit the Gruene-Flotte folks in Germany this spring (www.gruene-flotte.de/). They had a cozy, very workable, sit-down arrangement in their ESCARGOTs. As I recall, it was a slight stretch across from the opposite dinette, or a bucket or stool could be set up in the gangway.

Nice people, nice boats and a great way to try out shantyboat living!

Thanks guys. I figured a small gas lift stool on wheels would do the trick but good to have the confirmation. Unlikely to make it to Germany from Australia so would be very interested to know any more modifications that they built into their escargots. Pete
