Adventure Sailing: Outfitting the Boat

What does a boat need if it is heading out on its own for an extended period?  Let’s start with adventure sailing supplies:

Electrical system.  Assume water intrusion.  Possibilities include:

  • Solar panels/wind generator
  • Batteries
  • Navigation Lights
  • Interior lights, for reading and for general vision.
  • Electronics charging.  Multiple USB plugs.
  • cell phone
  • Kindles, e ink and HD
  • Ham radio
  • portable SW radio
  • Waterproof powered speakers
  • Spot satellite emergency system
  • 2 meter APRS system.
  • Ability to record audio
  • Kapture
  • Go pro
  • Hydrophone
  • Requires dashboard and waterproof system and water boxes.   Probably on side of boat, not in front of cabin.

Food and Water

  • Drinking water.  Heavy plastic jugs.
  • Bucket toilet with bags.  Solid waste only.   Liquid goes overboard?

Clothing

  • Rain gear
  • 2 pants
  • 3 t-shirts
  • 3 long sleeve shirts
  • 3 hand washable underwear
  • sweatshirt
  • windbreaker
  • Jacket
  • Canvas shoes
  • Hiking boots
  • 3 pairs of socks
  • Washing: Large plastic bags, soap
  • Toiletries (toothbrush, paste, lotions, aloe, etc,)
  • Sunscreen (30 strength or higher) & lip balm with sunscreen
  • Sunglasses with leash
  • Hat with visor or wide rim
  • Insect repellent (small amount) 
  • Personal medicines ( anti diarrhea,band aids,neosporin, pain reliever) 
  • Biodegradable soap for laundry and saltwater baths; Joy soap is acceptable and suds up nicely in saltwater 
  • Small Day pack or dry bag
  • quart size water bottles
  • Duffel bag–Several medium or one large soft duffel bag works well.  
  • Clothes pins

Outside of boat:

  • Bumpers
  • Stem and stern point protectors?
  • Lines, bow – stern – trailing safety –
  • APRS antenna
  • Ham radio antenna
  • Ladder for reboarding.
  • Navigation and anchor lights – masthead
